Mekelle university conducts one health demonstration site field attachment orientation workshop for students from various disciplines

Mekelle University, Ethiopia conducted a One Health demonstration site field attachment orientation workshop from July18-21, 2016. Forty (40 students; 20 from College of Veterinary Medicine and 20 from School of Public Health) participated in the orientation workshop.  The objective of the field attachment is to train students on community engagement and identification of community health challenges at Hashenge district. The objective of the workshop was to educate students on the concepts of demo-site and community engagement through the One Health approach.

Dr. Gebretsadik, the Focal Person from Mekelle University School of Public Health delivered a talk on ‘The Historical Development of One Health concept and its practice’ to faculty and students. Dr. Berihun Afera, OHCEA Focal Person for the Mekelle University School of Veterinary Medicine, delivered a presentation on the set-up of the demo site, its importance, the goals and objectives of the field attachment. He also presented the syllabus of the field attachment. Faculty from Tufts University, University of Minnesota, a representative of the One Health Central and Eastern Africa (OHCEA), district health and veterinary officers from Ofla Woreda and Jimma University delegates participated in the workshop.

The next steps will be working to address the prioritized health challenges through either community outreach programs or conducting relevant short research studies.
