Professor Robertson in the meeting with Professor Charles Mulei

The Nursing profession is a key partner in developing a One Health workforce. The One Health Workforce (OHW) project engages faculty and students from human health sciences, veterinary medicine and environmental/ecosystems health. The focus is on complex health issues at the animal, human and environment interface.

The nursing profession plays an integral role in building the future One Health workforce. Nurses represent the largest group of public health workers worldwide. Nurses serve as 95% of Kenya’s public health workforce. They are often the only health professionals in rural communities and the first professionals to see and suspect a problem.

In late April 2016, Professor Cheryl Robertson visited the Moi University and University of Nairobi Departments of Nursing to bring to light the need for collaboration between nursing and other fields and to highlight why nursing is part of One Health.

During the visit, Professor Cheryl held a meeting with the Dean –Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nairobi and the two discussed the One Health network and areas of interest and upcoming activities that needed US support.
